The unmissable Sainte-Croix fair in Lessay, an age-old event

The Sainte-Croix de Lessay fair was created in XNUMXth century by the religious of theLessay Abbey in order to promote the development of trade. The monks were responsible for the material organization and ensured that it ran smoothly. A thousand years later, the monks left the abbey but the Lessay fair has remained an unmissable event throughout Normandy.

the most important fair in Normandy

Every year, on the second weekend of September, the Lessay fair brings together approximately 100 000 visitors from all walks of life for one of the most festive moments in the region. There is something for everyone at the Sainte-Croix fair in Lessay. 1500 exhibitors are present for three days on the Grand'Lande with an area of 32 hectares : the equivalent of 45 football fields.

Lessay: a giant farm for 3 days

Le Friday morning at the Foirail, we attend the horse fair, ponies and donkeys with almost 1000 animals to the delight of buyers but also visitors. THE Saturday, the sheep and goat fair highlights 600 animals. Breeders set up a horse exhibition as well as competitions. More than 350 cattle, the most beautiful of the Manche department representing the Normande, Salers, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Prim'holstein and Montbéliard breeds participate in breeding competitions during the weekend.

An aisle of roasters not to be missed

The most famous street of the fair is of course the alley of the roasters, full of colors and smells! We skewer legs and shoulders of mutton to grill them over a wood fire, in the open air as they have for several centuries. We come to eat there with family or friends around a good festive meal.
