Nestled between land and sea, a few kilometers from the beach, this Pirou castle is an architectural gem steeped in history that can be discovered with the family. Thus, young and old will be transported to the Middle Ages for an afternoon. Come and discover its walkway, its famous tapestry and its legend of the geese.
A fortified castle surrounded by a moat
Dating from the 12th century, the Pirou fortress was built on an islet in the middle of an artificial pond. She formerly used to defend a harbor but also its natural anchorage. To access the castle, you must cross five fortified gates turning around the central moat where the 18th century bakery, the press, the chapel, the Plaids room and the old stables are located. In the 17th century, the drawbridge is replaced by the stone bridge which today leads inside the castle.

Pirou's embroidery: the Normans conquered Sicily
From 1976 to 1992, Ms. Ozenne created an embroidery which recounts the conquest of Sicily and southern Italy by the Norman lords. This embroidery is made with the same stitch as the famous Bayeux tapestry. “It took me 16 years to create 58 meters of embroidery under the gaze of God (…) at the rate of 3 hours daily in daylight and 1,5 cm per hour (…)” Thérèse Ozenne. All of the embroidery is visible at the Château de Pirou, from spring to autumn, in the Plaids room. In winter, a smaller part remains visible.
