To make the most of the beauties of the west coast of Cotentin, the guardhouse of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay is a must-see. It formerly made it possible to monitor maritime traffic between the coast and the Channel Islands. Now transformed into a chapel, it is an essential place for hikers and families who stop there to admire the view of the harbor of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay, one of the largest on the coast of havens.
The guardhouse of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay and its exceptional panorama
The guardhouse of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay is an ideal place to admire high tides. Indeed, at low tide, the harbor extends as far as the eye can see between salt meadows and sandbanks. And at high tide, it finds itself surrounded by the sea and only access via the parking lot is possible. Let's not forget that we are near the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel where the highest tides in Europe occur.
What if you counted the sheep that feast on the salt meadows?
The Notre-Dame-du-Roraire chapel
This old guardhouse is a vestige of defense of the Cotentin coasts under the Ancien Régime. Transformed into a chapel after the Second World War, the building, attacked by marine erosion, was completely restored between 1977 and 1987. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1992.
