The City of the Sea in Cherbourg: where the stories begin
Located in the former Transatlantic Maritime Station, La Cité de la Mer is the Normandy tourist site dedicated to the adventure of Man and the sea.
Embark aboard the Redoutable*, a unique experience in the largest visitable submarine in the world. A multilingual audio guide is provided during the visit for young and old. Ocean Listening: a new visitor experience that immerses you in the soundscapes of the underwater world.
*For safety reasons, children under 5 years old are not allowed to visit the submarine.
Explore the ocean, the last wild territory on the planet around aquariums dazzling with color and life and spectacular multimedia spaces.
Follow in the footsteps of the explorers of the abyss and the machines that have marked the adventure of men under the sea.
Relive the last hours of the Titanic: soak up the atmosphere on board and become witnesses to this historic cruise. Discover objects brought up from its wreckage.
With the majestic Baggage Room*, discover the time when Cherbourg was nicknamed “Gateway to the Americas”.
*During cruise ship stopovers, the baggage room is not accessible.
Two screenings* are offered in the Auditorium; one on the first 20 days which led the allies from Utah Beach to Cherbourg in 1944; the other allows you to listen to the sea tell its version of the history of Normandy.
*If the Auditorium is unavailable, screenings cannot take place. Access and times specified on site.
Allow 4 to 5 hours for the visit.
