Along the tourist route from Barneville-Carteret to Agon-Coutainville, you can observe vegetable crops. In particular, the famous Créances sand carrots are grown there. Every year, in August, a festival is even dedicated to them: “The Carrot Festival” in Créances.
History of honeys or cellars
By the sea, the plots of white sand, called “Les Mielles”, are plots sheltered from the dunes. They were cleared to grow vegetables in the sand. In the 1930s, carrot cultivation really took off. After the war, ditches called cellars located behind the dune cord were cultivated. The presence of sand makes this land very beneficial for vegetables. Indeed, sand acts as a natural filter by allowing water to seep through it while retaining solid particles and contaminants. This sandy soil is without stones or gravel, which allows growth without obstacles.
In the center of the Channel, you can find the famous carrot Receivables. It is recognized throughout France thanks to its controlled designation of origin. The harvest period is from mid-August to mid-May. The Créances sand carrot obtained the red label in 1962, a guarantee of quality and recognition.
